So here I am sitting across from a young gentleman Nathan who is asking my advise on the perfect engagement ring. I'm explaining the 5 C's of seclecting the perfect diamond and he asked me a question I have never been asked before....
What is the true meaning of the engagement ring?
I had to stop and think to myself , after 5 years of education and over 20 years in the field, I can tell you lots of technical information about a diamond , but how do I tell Nathan what the meaning is to them.
I tell him the tradition today is to spend 3 months salary on a diamond......that it is rare and so precious......the true meaning is soooo not easy....it is personal and means different things to different people.
I think the basic meaning of an engagement ring has remained the same over the years. The wearing of one symbolising a promise made between two people of the intention of marriage. The deeper meaning however has changed significantly over time…
Over the centuries, a ring no longer symbolises that the lady has become a possession of their husband and that they are then owned through marriage. It is also no longer seen as a form of dowry or insurance for the bride in case the husband-to-be was to call off the wedding, because as in todays world a woman has just as much right to call off a marriage herself and today there is no problem even if she earns more than her fiancé does.
So ask yourself – what does an engagement ring mean to you? Is it a status or a wealth symbol? A way for your fiancé to show everyone how much he values your ❤️? Or is it a personal reminder symbolising that you have both chosen to commit eternally to one another?
Egyptians used natural substances such as hemp, leather, bone and leather. The husband gave a ring to his wife once married to show their wealth to her family. Thats were wearing rings on the 4th finger on their left hand began because they believed that a vein connected to the heart.
Romans used verbal consent between the husband-to-be and father of the bride to declare an engagement. The woman would receive two rings after marriage , one made of gold to wear out in public and the other made of Iron which she wore at home. These signified that the husband owned her.
In the Middle Ages marriages did not require a cermony , to prevent people from marrying more than one person, or marrying family members, a law was created called ‘Banns of Marriage’ to make sure there was a period after a couple announced they were to be wed for anyone to object to the marriage. This time became the ‘engagement’ and rings indicated the promise of marriage. Rings were a way to show that a woman was off limiits.
A engagement ring was given by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 and that began the diamond tradition known in todays world . The ring he gave her when he proposed featured raw diamonds set in the shape of an "M" on a gold band . It was a hit!
The period known as the romantic era set a trend of giving ornate rings. Personalised with engravings of love poems, and decorated with heart and flower details. The powerful love between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert during this period, made it clear that love was now present in many marriages even within the royal family.
After a large discovery of diamonds in the 1800’s they became more accessible to the middle class. De Beers made people believe diamonds were the only way to show your love and encouraged people to buy them as ‘diamonds are forever’. Up until the current day most rings classified as ‘engagement rings’ feature diamonds of some form and there it became a standard that the gentleman should spend 3 months salary on them.
What is clear and easy to answer is that the giving of a ring, is a sign of intention to marry. In all cultures it is a way to tell our partner ...I want to witness your life... Share our lives....and enhance our lives. There is no right or wrong answer to what the ring symbolizes , every individual can decide for that for themselves.

I AM YOUR HOILDAY GIFT GUIDE......I'M THE SALES PROFESSIONAL.....those of us who work in retail , the Christmas season holds a special place in our hearts....We are here to guide and make every wish come true....When I was little I remember Christmas as magical , waking up Christmas morning to piles of gifts that by magic appeared under our tree......Fast forward to the present and our adult reality is we are the magic that makes it happen...when your profession relies largely on this season to go well, Black Friday marks the starting point for our ❤️ for the season .
Here is is were the fun begins...............
Black Friday is the first day of the holiday season when shoppers' souls temporarily go dark, customers tear through stores and salespeople mourn the loss of their sanity for the next 30 days, as well as lose their love ❤️ for Christmas (don't worry the love comes back) . Sales professionals are your personal shoppers and have dedicated their careers to making you , the client find the perfect gift and make someone's wishes come true ....Sometimes, however, some Shoppers believe other wise . LOL.....This thinking not only spoils their retail excursion, but also makes our jobs more difficult. We are on your side ...we work for you!
Here are the things your sales perfessional wished you understood .
We aren't crazy! YES ....WE SING ALONG with the Christmas music but consider yourself lucky for being able to leave when you want, while we are listening to Christmas songs on repeat for the better part of December. Trust us, we wouldn't change the channel even if we could...we actually have found ourselves singing gingle bells during July....really !
YOU CAN linger around during closing time. There is no anguish for us when you walk in 5 minutes before closing , please take your time ! We live for this time of year, and a few minutes of our time can't be compared to the despair you feel when you rush to make a decision . We want to be your personal shoppers not only now , but in the future.
We know you understand our season is officially crazy with inconsistent and weird hours, especially when we have to work a double ....But we are here for you , don't hesitate to ask us for the impossible , you never know we could make it happen. I have drove gifts across states lines on Christmas Eve , to get it there on time for my clients , who I now consider my friends.
Yes , we are on our feet for upwards of eight hours a day, It's exhausting and your feet hurt , your legs are killing you and you crave a chair instead of food. Thank you for cutting me a break and not laughing when I'm running not walking to help you. I know I look crazy !
We know shopping is stressful, I WILL SMILE...and No, I have not been drinking ....I live for the day when your loved one stops in and tells us how much they love your selection! ❤️
We understand that other aggressive shoppers drain out all the cheer you have for your holidays, but keep your cool. You have no idea what they are personally are going thru. Don't stay at home and shop on line... We can advise and guide you in the right direction.
Yes.. We don't get paid enough to deal with crazy , but we are interested in the details of your life. I ❤️ a good love story.
Please forgive me if I forget your name 40 Seconds after you tell me ... Especially on the 14th day working in a row ...I'm lucky I remember my own name at that point..
There are mystery shoppers to make sure I'm doing my job well... This is a real thing! Companies hire undercover shoppers to secretly monitor employees and keep them on track… So you don't have to. So when all the staff members ask you over and over if you need help while your in the store , understand we are not pressuring you. We want to do our jobs well.
Forgive us if we ask you about the weather outside ....Not only have we given up prime time for this, including Friday nights and weekends, but also we have given up our outside privileges for a whole month.
ALL JOKES BESIDE...
Thank you all for braving the crazy mall this HOLIDAY SEASON . If it wasn't for of all of you coming out and shopping I wouldn't be able to do what I love ❤️....And Thank you to all my fellow retail professionals for all the dedicated hours you serve ..have a happy holiday season...and because of your hard work.......I keep my love for Christmas again this year....!
l ❤️love hand written thank you notes.
Every time I receive these very rare gems I get so excited that you can find me standing at the curb in front of my house reading it right away....with a big smile on my face.
The authors of these letters took the time to take pen to paper to express themselves. The value of these handwritten notes have stayed with me long after I received them. I had saved most of these notes and when cleaning up to move I can across several of them , they made me feel just as good as they did the day I originally receivd them.
Maybe it was just a note to thank someone for taking a few minutes to do something for you , or simply the gift of someone's time, their advice, or a helping hand. Maybe someone did something thoughtful , in return the author returns the favor with the gift of their time writing a note.
Less people take the time to take pen to paper to express themselves. Let's not let texting and e-mails replace the personal touch. Don't let technology steal any sort of personal connection. I think an handwritten note is an important means of communication in both the personal and professional world. I want to maintain relationships. We need to understand the value of the writing notes by hand.
In my professional life I know I think highly of the business contact who still sees value in this lost form of communication , and it does set them apart from the average. this sets the true professional apart and lets the recipient know you care.
I think the good news is it can be brief . A handwritten thank you does not need to be lengthy to show your feelings. If that is what is holding you back, GET OVER IT! Write your note in your own handwriting. don't use the excuse that your handwriting is unattractive or just plain illegible. It doesn’t matter!
People won't remember your handwriting! They will remember your effort.....
Maybe........the next time you open that mail box you will find yourself standing at the curb with a smile on your face !
Throughout history, people believed that citrine carried the same powers as topaz, including the ability to calm tempers, soothe anger and manifest desires, especially prosperity. To leverage these powers, Egyptians used citrine gems as talismans, the ancient Greeks carved iconic images into them, and Roman priests fashioned them into rings.
A key discovery gave citrine a boost of popularity in the mid-18th century. Mineralogists realized that amethyst and smoky quartz could be heat treated to produce lemony and golden honey hues of citrine, contributing to an abundance of affordable enhanced gems on the market.
Once citrine was distinguished from topaz, it quickly became popular in women’s jewelry as well as men’s cufflinks and rings. I feel t is one of the most rich looking , affordable and definitely the most frequently purchased yellow gemstone.
Whether shopping for a November birthday, a 13th wedding anniversary, or just an affordable piece of jewelry to complement any style, citrine makes a perfect gift.
Even fine, large gems are modestly priced, which means everyone can find citrine to fit their budget.
Because the majority of citrine gems on the market have been heat treated—and because it takes an expert to detect these enhancements—it’s wise to shop with an jeweler who can help you choose the best gem.
The finest citrine gems are saturated with yellow, orange and reddish hues, while stones of lower value appear pale or smoky. Earth-tones of amber brown are also popular.
